The Whisperings
A story of the breathing of my soul

"Cynthia is a very bright person with
exceptional creative and artist ability.
She is a superb musician."

 - by D. T., a supporter for over 30 years

The early whisperings of the flute started when I was 9 years old.
The first time I saw a flute, I immediately became enchanted with
the instrument, which ignited a passion in my heart for playing. At
the age of 13, I attended the Riverbend Institute of the Arts in Faribault,
Minnesota. The encouragement I received there plunged me into
a life filled with music. Shortly after, I was selected to play in the
Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony (GTCYS) for two years. This
was an incredible experience as a young person, especially playing
at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.

I grew up in a nurturing community that opened up many creative
opportunities and experiences and for that I am grateful. I am
also thankful for all of the highly influential flute teachers that
instilled skills and valuable training in my life. My first teacher
was Kris Raaen, she gave me a great foundation for a life of
playing the flute. Then in Junior and High School, I took lessons
from Kay Sahlin a professor at Saint Olaf College. During college
at Bethel University, my flute teacher was Professor Mary Roberts
Wilson.

My family has a rich heritage of music and I grew up in a home
with my mother having a piano studio and my father playing
harmonica and singing. My grandfather was an entertainer on
the piano and captivated the hearts of his audience. My great
aunt played piano until she was 92 years old. She reminded
me in Sept of 2010 that God had given our family the gift of music.
She encouraged me continue to use this gift.

Since I started playing the flute over 30 years ago, I have been
a private lesson instructor, freelance musician for weddings,
celebrations, church and festivals. I also was a member of the pit
orchestra for the Paradise Community Theater (formerly FACT
community theater) for a span of ten years. I played for the
following musical productions: My Fair Lady, The Carousel,
Singing in the Rain, Annie Get Your Gun and The King and I.
I have recorded three CDs: Lullabies for the Children, Whisperings of Solace and
Winter Whispers

I am currently a member of the Minnesota Music Teacher’s Association,
Music Teacher’s National Association, Upper Midwest Flute Society,
Paradise Theater for the Arts, Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony
Alumni Association, Alumni of the Bethel University Music Department
and Flute Volunteer at The Augustana Care Center in Minneapolis.
